LIONS CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
NO. 9 March 3, 2004
Editor: Lion Ed Xavier

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF February 12, 2004
Our Charter Night and Valentine's Dinner was a lot of fun.  We shared the evening with the Union City Lioness Club and it is always fun to party with them.  Lioness President Lu Goni personally decorated the room with hearts and flowers and candles, a very festive setting.  Lioness Heidi Kitayama prepared songs of the season for us to sing.
We were joined by Vice District Governor Sue Olin who made this her official visit to our club for her campaign for District Governor.  Joining Lion Sue was her husband Lion (District Governor incognito) Bob Olin.  Lions Sue and Bob enjoyed the old songs, even if we did butcher a few of them.
Union City Lions were in good voice for most of the evening.  We were ably led by Lions Gloria Watson and Debbie Leonicio and by Lioness Heidi Kitayama.
The program of the evening was about club vests and Lions trading pins.  Our new members were able to walk away with a handful each of trading pins courtesy of some of our older members, past and present.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF FEBRUARY 26, 2004

Our guest speaker was former Union City Lion Ken Smith, presently a Director for the Union Sanitary District.  Ken spoke to us about the sanitary district, its operations, and its plans for the future.  The sanitary district treats an amount of wastewater eery two weeks that is enough to fill the Oakland Coliseum.  Ken Smith brought a staff member, Joanie Deis, with him to help him with his presentation.

REPORT ON MEMBERSHIP ORIENTATION MEETING OF FEBRUARY 26, 2004

Membership chair Lion Helen Kennedy put on a very meaningful new member orientation meeting.  New members attending were Lions Tony Acosta, Chuck Harvey, Pam Navarro, and Ida Gueco.  Also attending were associate Lion member Andy DeNoga and prospective member, Wai Bowie Lee.  Wai Bowie Lee is a former member of the San Francisco Chinatown Lions. Helping Lion Helen with the orientation were Lion President Jim, Lion First Vice President Rick, and Lion Historian Ed.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Our membership drive is in full swing.  We want to encourage every Lion to invite friends and family to join us at our meetings and events.  We only need four more new members before Lion Rick will cheerfully receive a pie in his face.  Who gets to throw the pie?  That lucky Lion will be selected from among Lions who have sponsored new members during this fiscal year.  Sponsor a new Lion and have a chance to be the one to throw the pie!
Remember that the club will treat a prospective new member to their first lunch or dinner as our guest.  This gives people an opportunity to visit us and see if they have an interest in our club without incurring any financial obligation.  You also get to invite a friend to lunch and have that lunch paid for by the club.  Such a deal.

STUDENT SPEAKERS

The Union City Lions Club Student Speakers was held on February 23, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. at Logan High School.  Lion Regis Amann chaired this event.  The subject this year is "Democracy, is it for everyone?"  We had three excellent speakers from James Logan High School, Candace Nguyen, Michael Joski, and Aman Grewal.  The winner was Aman Grewal, a senior at James Logan High School. Also attending were Lions Ken Buffum, Chuck Harvey, Rick Sealana, Alice Huang, Don and Gloria Watson.
The next level of competition is the zone contest which is set for March 10, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. at the Fremont library.  Please try to attend and support Union City's Aman Grewal at the next level of competition.

REPORT ON PRESIDENTS, SECRETARIES AND TREASURES DINNER OF FEBRUARY 29, 2004

Lion President Jim and Lion Secretary Don attended the third district cabinet meeting at Rossmoor.  It was also a time to recognize the work done by this years Presidents and Secretaries.  Lions Jim and Don received citations for their good work this year.  The Lions of Union City  know they do good work.

MARCH IS NOMINATION MONTH

March is the time for our nominating committee to make its report to the membership of its proposed slate of officers and directors for 2004-2005.  There will also be a proposal put to the membership to increase club dues to cover the increase in membership fees that we must pay to Lions International and for other administrative assessments. We also expect that there will be a proposal to amend our Club By-Laws to add one or more positions to the board of Directors.
If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors, please contact a member of the nominating committee, Lions Helen Kennedy, Carol Dutra Vernaci, or Ed Xavier.
