LIONS CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
NO. 10 April 4, 2004
EDITOR: LION ED XAVIER

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF March 11, 2004

Our speaker at this meeting was Lion Ron Hudson from the Dawnbreakers Lions Club speaking to us about the City of Hope.  We heard about the mission and the activities of the City of Hope.  We also reminisced about past Union City Lions' President Luther Powell and his experience with the City of Hope when he went through his terminal bout with cancer.
New member Lion Bowie Lee was inducted into our club.  Her sponsor was Lion Andy DeNoga.
Also present as a guest of Lion Andy DeNoga was Jose "Joe" Albano.  Joe has accepted membership in our club and will be inducted at our meeting of April 8, 2004.  God work Lion Andy.
Lion Helen Kennedy, chair of our Nominations Committee, read the proposed slate of officers for next year.  This was the first reading of the slate.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF March 25, 2004

The list of proposed officers for next year was read for the second time by Lion Helen Kennedy.
Our speaker was Buzz Covalt from Comcast cable company.  He spoke to us about his cable show "Getting involved".  He showed us a video of an interview he conducted with Lions Gloria Watson and Ken Buffum.  His cable show documents the impact of service organizations on their community.
Our Leos' Club continues with their successful year.  On March 20 thirty (30) Union City Leos attended the Leos' district convention.  Our own Leos' President Sarah Chang was a candidate for a district office.  On March 27 the Leos conducted a food drive.  They went house to house to collect food to donate to needy families.

REPORT ON SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE MEETING OF March 17, 2004

Nine members met to review scholarship applications from many deserving High School seniors.  Helping co-chairs Lions Cathy Kelly and Tom Kitayama were Lions Chuck Harvey, Colleen Hernandiz, Pam Navarro, Jim Navarro, Jeene Quyen-Nghiem, Rick Sealana, and Helen Kennedy.  Also helping was Lioness Heidi Kitayama. Three scholarships were awarded.  One for $1,000.00, one for $800.00, and one for $600.00.  I will tell you the names of the awardees in our next newsletter after they have been announced at the James Logan High School awards ceremony.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Our membership drive is in full swing.  Lion Andy DeNoga brought two new members to our club in the past month.  We want to encourage every Lion to invite friends and family to join us at our meetings and events.  We only need two more new members before Lion Rick will cheerfully receive a pie in his face.  Who gets to throw the pie?  That lucky Lion will be selected from among Lions who have sponsored new members during this fiscal year.  Sponsor a new Lion and have a chance to be the one to throw the pie!
Remember that the club will treat a prospective new member to their first lunch or dinner as our guest.  This gives people an opportunity to visit us and see if they have an interest in our club without incurring any financial obligation.  You also get to invite a friend to lunch and have that lunch paid for by the club.  Such a deal.

STUDENT SPEAKERS

The next level of competition is the region contest which is set for April 6, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. at the offices of the Alameda County Water District located on Grimmer Blvd. In Fremont.  It is south of Auto Mall Parkway.  Our speaker Aman Grewal is competing.  He has won the first two levels.  Please try to attend and support Union City's Aman Grewal at the next level of competition.

MARCH IS NOMINATION MONTH

March is the time for our nominating committee to make its report to the membership of its proposed slate of officers and directors for 2004-2005.  There is also be a proposal put to the membership to increase club dues to $85.00 per year to cover the increase in membership fees that we must pay to Lions International and for other administrative assessments.
