LIONS CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
NO. 12 June 3, 2004

REPORT ON BOARD MEETING OF MAY 10, 2004:

We approved accepting a new member, Alexander Choi.  Alex is the owner/operator of Choi's Marshall Arts in Union City.  His sponsor is Lion Tom Kitayama.
Our Leo's Club reported on their candy drive to raise money to purchase a service dog for Angela Rodriguez, age 12.  The Leos bought candy and groceries in bulk, repackaged it, and sold them to fellow students at Logan.  They raised $300.00.  A service dog is trained to open and close doors, pick up items, and do other tasks for people who cannot do those tasks for themselves.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF MAY 13, 2004

Our guest speaker at this meeting was Aman Grewall, our student speaker candidate from Logan High School.  He presented his speech.  We also enjoyed his responses to our questions about the direction of his life.  It is always a pleasure to hear from hard working talented young people who have the world before them.
We had a visitor from India.  He is Lion Ajitbhai Thanawala from Bombay, India.  He serves his district as chair for work with the blind.  He reported to us that there are 12 million blind in India.
Our own past district governor Rex Davis and his wife joined us for the meeting.  He was accompanied by his lovely wife Gerri.  PDG Lion Rex inducted new member Lion Alexander Choi into our club.
We were glad to see Lion Bernard Lipscomb and his wife Dolores.  Lion Bernard brought as his guest Tom Allison.  Lion Bernanrd will sponsor Tom Allison to join our club.  Tom is a former member of our club and has served our club as Club Secretary.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF MAY 27, 2004

This was a joint meeting of the Union City Lions Club and of the Union City Chamber of Commerce.  Lion Rick Sealana conducted the meeting with help from Lion President Jim Navarro and from Lion Christine Friday, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce.  The theme of the meeting was the upcoming Alameda County Fair.  Lion Rick is a member of the Board of Directors of the Alameda County Fair.  Rick Pickering, the director of the fair spoke to us about the history of the fair and the fun and exciting events that we can expect at this year's fair.
The meeting was also a platform for us to tell the community about our activities as Lions.  Lion Don Watson spoke about our two blind centers.  Lion Gloria Watson spoke about the activities of our Club over the past year. Lion Ida Gueco brought several guests who are potential members for our club. Good work Lion Ida.  Two members of the Chamber of Commerce expressed interest in becoming members.

LEOS' CLUB INSTALLATION:

Your correspondent has heard that the event was a success.  Lions Don and Gloria Watson survived the invasion of their home by numerous teenagers.  I need to talk with Lion Glo to find out more facts to report to you.  More news on this event in our next newsletter.
