Lion Helen Kennedy announced that a trip to Los Cabos in Mexico is being planned for the period of January 20 - 23, 2005.  Six slots are available for Lions from Union City to go on a long weekend trip to bring and to fit used eyeglasses to needy persons in Mexico.  Each Lion will have to pay their own expense to travel to Los Cabos.  The local Lions' club will provide housing, transportation and meals. This trip is sponsored by Lions in Sight.
Lion Glo reported that Logan High School still had not named a new Leo's advisor.  The Leos are planning to participate in an Aids walk.

The Union City Lions Club was well represented at the Alameda County fair.  Our own Lion Rick Sealana is a Director of the County Fair.  He hosted many Lions as his guests on July 8.  Among those attending were Lions Tony Acosta, Helen Kennedy, Ide Gueco, and Jim Navarro.
Lion Regis Amann was profiled by Lion Rock as the Lion of the Meeting.  Lion Rick told us about Lion Regis' past contributions to our community including many years of service as a member of the Board governing the New Haven District.
Our guest speaker was Mark Leonard, Community Development Director for Union City.  Mr. Leonard spoke to us about transportation projects in planning stages that involve Union City.  Union City is strategically located as a transportation hub in this area.  The ACE train is looking into establishing a station in Union City.  So is the L.A. Express.  We already have BART and the Dumbarton commuter.  Rail service from Union City to Redwood City is being considered.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF JULY 22, 2004

Lion President Rick arranged for us to meet in the conference room of Southern Wine and Spirits in Union City.  Our speaker was Colin Shutes, facilities manager for our host.  Mr. Shutes told us about the warehousing and shipping operation being conducted in Union City.  Southern Wine and Spirits is the largest employer in Union City, having about 1100 employees.  This facility serves California from Bakersfield to the Oregon border and east to the Nevada border. 35,000 cases per night are shipped out of Union City.

FIREWORKS BOOTH:

I omitted to mention in our last bulletin that Past District Governor Rex Davis paid a visit to our booth.  He brought a dozen doughnuts to raise the spirits of the workers at the booth.
