LIONS CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
    NO. 3  September 7, 2004

REPORT ON BOARD MEETING OF AUGUST 9, 2004:
The Board held its meeting at the home of Lion President Rick Sealana and his wife Kathy.  Visiting our meeting were Tom Sims and Bill Westcott of the Boy Scouts. Lion Bill Fournell reported that sales totaled $28,215.14 from fireworks.  We sold more than last year.  Our gros profit before contributions to the Scouts and others came to about $8,500.00.  Good work Lions!
The Board then approved ordering new personal badges for our use. The badge will identify us by name and as a member of the Union City Lions Club.  It will have the Lion's logo imprinted on it.  Lion Jim Navarro is checking out cost for local acquisition. Preliminary estimates are that a regular badge with a pin to fasten it will cost $6.00 and a badge that uses a magnet to fasten it will cost $8.00.  Each member will be asked to pay the cost of their own badge.
We resolved to look into holding a Luau during calendar year 2005 as a fundraiser.  Lion Jim Navarro will do the preliminary planning for this event.
May 15, 2005, was set for the date of the joint Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce Wine and Dine expo to be held at the Crown plaza hotel.
We approved accepting Bruce Davis as a new member.  More on lion Bruce later.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF AUGUST 12, 2004
We welcomed Lion Bruce Davis into our club.  He was inducted by Lion Zone Chair Jim Navarro; his very first induction of a new Lion. Most assuredly this will not be his last. Lion Bruce was born in 1963, the year that our club was founded.  He is married and has two children.  Lion Bruce runs his own computer business.  He already has made a contribution to our club by getting our club website up and running. Check out unioncitylions.com.
New Lion Alexander Choi profiled Lion Bill Fournell. Lion Bill is married and has two children.  He moved to Unon City in the late 1970s.  Since 1983 he has been self employed in construction remodeling. He is active in Scouting, the American Red Cross, and Union City politics. He has been a member of the union City Lions Club since 2000.  He has chaired our fireworks fundraiser for the last three years.  His hobbies are scuba diving and photography.  Lion Bill has a Bachelor's degree from Nebraska State College and a Master's degree from San Francisco State College.
Our guest speaker was Wliiam Hamersky from the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District.  He spoke to us about West Nile Virus.  He informed us about the quick spread of this virus across the United States traveling by way of bird migration routes. He also explained to us that most humans have little to fear from contracting this virus.  For most humans the symptoms a a mild flu that lasts for a few days.  Elderly people and people with damage immune systems are at greater risk. Horses are at such a high risk that one out of three horses contracting West Nile Virus either die or are euthanized.  Horses have a vaccine.  Humans do not. He also taught us about the life cycle of mosquitos and showed us where to spot likely mosquito breeding grounds and what to do when we find a mosquito breeding ground.
West Nile is a serious threat to our public health.  This program was very helpful in letting us know about the extent of threat from this virus and things that we can do to help ourselves.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF AUGUST 26, 2004
Lion President Rick arranged for us to meet at CARTER INDUSTRIES located on Whipple Road in union City.  We were hosted by Rod Belscher of Carter Industries who told us about his company.  They are part of the supply system for trucks and vans that support our mobile work force.  If you see a tradeperson's truck or van, a phone, cable company, or PG&E truck or van modified to carry tools and parts, that vehicle likely was modified by Carter Industries to have parts bins and tool bins added to the vehicle. The factory ships vehicles to   Carter Industries which then makes the modifications and then transports the modified vehicles to a dealer.  Carter Industries employs about 65 employees in Union City.
Lion President Rick reported on his dinner with Lions Coy and Marilyn Moody in Redding. The are doing well and are active with Lions in Redding.  Lately they have been helping out with fire relief to help those suffering from wild fire sin the Redding area.

Remember that the club will treat a prospective new member to their first lunch or dinner as our guest.  This gives people an opportunity to visit us and see if they have an interest in our club without incurring any financial obligation.  You also get to invite a friend to lunch and have that lunch paid for by the club.  Such a deal.
