LIONS CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
NO. 6 November 26, 2004
SENIOR CITIZENS THANKSGIVING DINNER:
The 27th annual Al Roderigues Senior Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by the lions
club of Union City was a huge success. We served over 320 seniors a full
turkey dinner from salad to pumpkin pie. The band from the USS Hornet added swing
music to round out an evening of fun and dancing for many happy seniors.
For the Lions of the Union City Lions Club, this function shows that as a group
we can accomplish much more than any of us can do as individuals. Thirty
Union City Lions, many Lionesses and Leos contributed to make this a fun evening. Lion
DG Sue Olin and PDG Bob Olin came , helped, danced, and had a good time.
Co chairs Lions Richard and Barbara Valle once again outdid themselves. They
and Tri-Ced are the largest financial backer of this event. Lion Barbara
toiled as chief cook and bottle washer which is a role that she chooses. Lion
Richard was our master of ceremonies.
Lion Tom Kitayama gave our invocation and Lion Conrad Preciado led us in a salute
to our flag.
Lions Tony Acosta and Ed Xavier were the supply gophers this year. They
purchased food and paper products and had the items on hand and ready to be used
on time.
Lions Bill Fournell were the turkey trotters this year. They picked up
24 turkeys from the Crown Plaza hotel which cooked them for us. They brought
the turkeys to the Ruggieri center for carving.
Then Lion Conrad Preciado and his family took over. Lion Conrad and his
wife Judy take charge of the annual carving of the birds. The were assisted
by their daughter, Terri, and by Lions Rick Sealana, Regis Amann, Jim Navarro,
and Roy Palilio
While the turkeys were being carved, our kitchen crew, ably led by Lions Ken
Buffum and Colleen Hernandiz, prepared the potatoes and vegetables needed for
the evening's meal.
Outside in the dining hall, Lions Glo Watson and Helen Kennedy and the first
shift of Leos decorated the tables and set the silverware. Yes, I said
the first shift of Leos. The Leos provided badly needed people power in
two shifts. Many thanks to the Union City Leos.
Our drink concessionaires, Lions Joe Albano and Bruce Davis prepared the coffee
(regular and decaf) and the punch and kept the liquids flowing all evening. They
were helped by Darlene Davis, Lion Andy De Noga, Lion Alice Huang and her guest,
Dave. Leave it to Lion Alice to bring a date and make him work.
Other Lions helping out where needed were Loins Jonny Tahirkheli, Larry Cheeves,
Cathy Kelley, Jaime Jaramillo, Mark Tayo, Ida Gueco, Kathy Sealana, and Al Rose. Lion
family members assisting were Anna Acosta and Carmen Jaramillo.
Lion Joe Kimura was away on family business and could not help on the evening
of the function, but he gets the thankless task of sorting through all our leftover
supplies and organizing our supply shed after it was stripped for this function.
Lionesses collected and prepared the pumpkin pies. I noted Lionessess Lu
Goni, Heidi Kitayama, Laura Wittler, Antoinette Seoane, and Marcella Roderigues.
27 Leos contributed to make this a well attended function. Many hands make
for light work.
If you helped and I did not mention your name, I apologize. The evening
went quickly and I did not note your contribution. Please call me and I
will make amends in our next bulletin.
Great job, one and all.
REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF NOVEMBER 11, 2004:
This was the first meeting run by First Vice president Carol Dutra Vernacci.
She survived the experience without her bell or gavel being stolen. Was this
professional courtesy or are club members not up to the challenge? Members
of the Dawn Breakers Club paid us a visit. They were Lions Cathy Hudson,
John Juarez, Bob Chase, and Gerri Leonard. Other visitors were Linda Fernandez
and Darlene Davis.
Our speaker was Lion Jerry Newell from the Oakland Blind Center. He brought
us up to date about activities at the center. We learned that the land
that the center sits on was donated by Kaiser Steel and Lions built the structures.

to needy families.

MEMBERSHIP:
We will be inducting between three and five new members at our Christmas party
meeting. What a nice Christmas present to the club.
Remember that the club will treat a prospective new member to their first lunch
or dinner as our guest. This gives people an opportunity to visit us and
see if they have an interest in our club without incurring any financial obligation. You
also get to invite a friend to lunch and have that lunch paid for by the club. Such
a deal.
WINTERFEST:
Lion Jahan "Johny" Tahirkheli and Lion Colleen Hernandiz did a great job. They
created a slim 7 foot tree and decorated it beautifully. My one year old
grand daughter loved it and wanted to pull it down. Alas, your bulletin editor
was outbid by Lion Richard Valle who proudly displays the tree in the lobby of
Tri-Ced.
TOYS FOR TOTS MIXER:
The Lions Club is co-sponsoring a Toys for Tots drive on December 3, 2004, from
5pm to 8pm. It will take place at eMocha and we are partnering with the Chamber
of Commerce for this event. Please tell your friends and ask them to donate an
unwrapped new toy for a child in need. The US Marine Corps Color Guard will be
on hand for the festivities. Admission is free. If you can volunteer to work
at the Lions information table, please contact lion Helen Kennedy at 693-2217.
Thanks to Lions Jim Navarro and Ken Buffum for volunteering early!
LIONS IN SIGHT - MEXICO CLINIC VISIT:
The final six Lions have all booked their flights and are preparing for the trip
to Los Cabos. Mexico, where they will dispense eyeglasses to people in need.
Dr. David Boniface will be heading up the team of eye doctors on the trip. Our
Lion Technicians will arrive in Mexico on January 20 and will spend two days
assisting with eye exams and fitting people with eyeglasses. About 300 people
will receive the gift of sight each day. Lions Tony Acosta, Ida Gueco, Jaime
Jaramillo, Helen Kennedy, Rick Sealana, and Gloria Watson are all busily updating
their passports and getting their shots in preparation for the service project.
LEO'S BOWLATHON WENT WELL:
Our Leos raised a little more than $1,000.00 from the event. That should help
them fund many of their service activities for his year. Well done Leos.
SUNSHINE REPORT:
Lion Conrad Preciado is back home and doing well. He led the team of carvers
for out Thanksgiving dinner.
Lion Pam Navarro is hobbling around on crutches. No dancing for some time yet.
See you soon. Lion Ed Xavier
