LIONS CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
NO. 7  January 5, 2005

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF DECEMBER 9, 2004:

  • This was our Club’s Christmas party.  We began with drinks and finger food at Casa Xavier, then progressed to eMocha for our meeting and dinner.  Over 32 Lions and their guests were in attendance.
  • We inducted six new Lions - what a nice Christmas present to our club.  Our new Lions are Greg Stewart, Linda Fernandes, Mac Sandhu, Kathy Sealana, Steve Miller, and Diane La Mountaine.  Welcome to our club.
  • Many Lions contributed ornaments to go on the Christmas trees that our club is donating to needy families.
  • Many thanks to those who contributed to make the evening a success - Lions Tony Acosta and Helen Kennedy for the mull wine. Lions Don and Gloria Watson for the finger food.  Lion Ed Xavier for egg nog and Casa Xavier.  Lion Mac Sandhu for eMocha.  Lioness Heidi Kitayama for decorations.

REPORT ON BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING OF DECEMBER 13, 2004:

  • Lion Alex Choi asked the Club to partner with him in his charity Break-a-thon and senior appreciation lunch.  The Board agreed to support Lion Alex Choi in his effort.  The club committed to serving lunch to all seniors who attend the function.  The function will take place on February 19, 2005.  Please mark this date in your calendar if you can help.  Our work will be between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  More details to follow.
  • Our Club budget for this year was adopted.
  • Lion Joe Kimura volunteered to help Lion Jim Navarro on our Club Name Badge project.  The Board approved a form of name badge that will be locally produced.  Lion Joe will email or call you to get your order.  We want to spell your name correctly on your badge.
  • Lion Jim Navarro reported that he has 5 Christmas trees for the Clubs’ donation program.  Tom Madeiros’s tree lot donated two.  Lions Jim and Pam Navarro donated one, and our Club donated two.

MEMBERSHIP:

  • At last count we are 59 members strong.
  • Remember that the club will treat a prospective new member to their first lunch or dinner as our guest.  This gives people an opportunity to visit us and see if they have an interest in our club without incurring any financial obligation.  You also get to invite a friend to lunch and have that lunch paid for by the club.  Such a deal.

TOYS FOR TOTS MIXER:
The Toys for Tots drive took place on December 3, 2004, from 5pm to 8pm. Lion Mac Sandhu provided eMocha as the site for the drive.  He also donated food which the Leos ate with gusto.  The drive was a great success.

LIONS IN SIGHT - MEXICO CLINIC VISIT:
The final six Lions have all booked their flights and are preparing for the trip to Los Cabos. Mexico, where they will dispense eyeglasses to people in need. Dr. David Boniface will be heading up the team of eye doctors on the trip. Our Lion Technicians will arrive in Mexico on January 20 and will spend two days assisting with eye exams and fitting people with eyeglasses. About 300 people will receive the gift of sight each day. Lions Tony Acosta, Ida Gueco, Jaime Jaramillo, Helen Kennedy, Rick Sealana, and Gloria Watson are all busily updating their passports and getting their shots in preparation for the service project.

DISASTER RELIEF:
Many Lions are asking if the Club will be doing anything to help those suffering as a result of the tsunami that struck southeast Asia.  On Monday, January 10, 2005, our Board will take up this matter.
