LIONS CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
NO. 2  August 1, 2005

Once again the Lions of Union City responded to our largest fund raiser of the year.  Lion Bill Fournell reported the following numbers:

  • Gross sales:    $28,215.14
  • Cost of product:    12, 961.58
  • Cost of doing business:      6,361.61
  • Donation to Scouts:       1,025.00
  • Net income to Club:    $ 7,866.95

REPORT ON BOARD MEETING OF JULY 11, 2005

  • Lion Bill Fournell reported that we sold about $27,000.00 of product this year.  Lion Bill agreed to chair this event for next year.  Thank you Lion Bill.
  • Our Board agreed to participate in Lions’ Night at the A’s on September 23, 2005.  This will be a game against the Texas Rangers with a fireworks show following the game.  Our club will have a tail gate party before game time and we look forward to having a lot of fun at the game. Lion Tony Acosta volunteered to chair this event.
  • October 23, 2005, is Make a Difference day in Union City.  Please mark this date on your calendar.  Our Club commits to a project in Union City to make a difference in our city.  Lion Tony Acosta is looking into a project at the Meyer’s sister’s estate This estate is a hidden jewel in Union City known to very few people.  It was willed to the parks district upon the death of the last of the Meyer’s sisters.  Just having an opportunity to see the grounds is worth the price of one day’s labor for Make a Difference day.
  • Also reserve November 18, 2005, on your schedule.  This is the date set for the annual Lion Al Roderigues Senior Citizen’s Thanksgiving Dinner at the Lion Ralph Ruggieri Senior Citizen’s Center. More detials to follow.
  • October 8, 2005, is set as the date for the Fall Arts Festival.  Our Club is committed to hosting a booth serving wine at the festival.
  • Lions Carol Dutra Vernaci and Kathy Kelley spent an afternoon taking inventory of our product stored in the Club shed and cleaned out the shed.  We start the year knowing our inventory of stock.  Lets see if we can end the year knowing our inventory of stock.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF JULY 14, 2005

  • Our speaker was Lion Tony Acosta who spoke to us about the Union City Leisure Services Department.  One of Lion Tony’s many duties with the City is as Director of this department. The City employs six full time staff and about 150 part time staff to present the programs available through Leisure Services. One look at the schedule of events presented to the community is enough to impress one with the magnitude of the services provided.
  • Lions attending this meeting were Carol Dutra Vernacci, Joe Kimura, Ken Buffum, Rick Sealana, Linda Fernandes, Dianne LaMountaine, Don Watson, Gloria Watson, Bill Fournell, Andy Denoga, Johny Tahirkheli, Christine Friday (+2) Helen Kennedy, Tony Acosta, Mac Sandhu, Steve Miller, Pam Navarro, and Ed Xavier.
  • Lion Gloria reported that the Leos will participate in the Aids Walk in San Francisco onn July 17, 2005.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF JULY 28, 2005

  • Lions attending this meeting were Carol Dutra Vernaci, Jaime Jaramillo, Ken Buffum, Christine Friday (+2), Bruce Davis, Laura Stewart, Greg Stewart, Rick Sealana, Helen Kennedy, Tony Acosta, Larry Cheeves, and Ed Xavier.
  • Lion Helen Kennedy brought as guests of the Club the following potential new members:  Kim Evans, Phyllis Gray, Atul Mitra, Tim Gutierrez, and Makhan Bains.  Red hair becomes you, Lion Helen.
  • Lion Carol is trying to set up a tour and dinner at the Masonic Home on January 12, 2006.
  • Lion Helen announced that the guest speaker at our club on August 11, 2005, will be Dr. Bill Iannacone, past International Director of Lions and a good friend of this club.  He will ask each and every Lion present to spell his name correctly, so start practicing.  Give me an “I”, Give me an “A”, etc. He will speak about a recent trip he made to South East Asia on behalf of Lions in Sight.
  • Our speaker was our own Lion Jaime Jaramillo, Director of Centro de Servicios, who told us about the history of the organization and the services provided by Centro.  He has four paid staff and 15 to 20 volunteers to provide the social services.  They operate a community store, a food distribution service, provides direct services to many, and also refers clients to other agencies as needed.  Profits from their community store are used for scholarships, vouchers for the homeless, and transportation for those in need.
  • Lion Carol suffered the outrageous fortune of having her bell stolen by Lion Rick Sealana, then while she was moping over losing her bell, her gavel was stolen by Lion Ed Xavier. So much for Lion Carol’s boast of going through her year without losing either her bell or gavel.

SUNSHINE REPORT

  • Lion Al Rose has heart problems and earlier this year a stent was put in to help his circulation.  Apparently the medication that he is taking is causing bowel problems and Lion Al is under treatment for this side effect of his medication as well.
  • Lioness Laura Wittler has moved to Texas to be with one of her sons.  Before leaving she gave us dozens of pairs of used eyeglasses for our Lions in Sight program.  She also gave us Lion Buzz Wittler’s wheelchair, walker, and crutches.  We will find good use for these items. See you soon.
