With 75 tickets.
  • Plans for the Fall Arts Festival to take place on October 8, 2005, are also coming together. Union City Lions will seel wines from our own booth.
  • The Christmas dinner meeting was set for December 8, 2005.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF AUGUST 11, 2005

  • Dr. Bill Ianacone spoke to us about his recent trip to the tsunami ravaged areas of Sri Lanka. He also inducted four new members to our club - Tim Gutierrez, Phyllis Gray, Kim Evans, and Atul Mitra. Dr. Bill shared a bit of trivia with us - that BOTOX is Lions contribution to the world.  Physicians at the Lins’ Eye Foundation refined the proper dosage of BOTOX to use in connection with their research to find a treatment to relax or paralyze the muscle that causes cross-eye.
  • Lions attending were Carol Dutra Vernaci, Ken Buffum, Joe Kimura, Tim Gutierrez, Bruce Davis, Helen Kennedy, Fely Fernandez Kwan, Linda Fernandes, Gloria Watson, Don Watson, Joe Albano, Phyllis Gray, Johny Tahirkheli, Mac Sandhu, Conrad Preciado, Jim Navarro, Tony Acosta, Autl Mitra, Kim Evans, Pam Navarro, Ed Xavier and Doug Tatum.. Also in attendance was prospective Lion Christina Gallegos.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF AUGUST 25, 2005

  • Lions attending this meeting were Carol Dutra Vernaci, Rick Sealana, Ken Buffum, Chrtine Friday, Jim Navarro, Joe Kimura, Larry Cheeves, Tim Gutierrez, Ed Xavier, Mac Sandhu, Kathy Kelley, and Kim Evans.  Visting us were Past International Director, Lion Dr. Bill Ianacone, Christina Gallegos, Myro Garcia, Maria Garcia, and Union City Fire Chief Gerald Simon.
  • Our Guest Speaker was Cathy Sweeney who spoke to us about Union City’s CERT program.  This subject is very timely in light of hurricane Katrina striking the Gulf Coast.  Are we prepared to survive for 72 hours without any assistance from the outside? I am writing this newsletter 48 hour after Katrina struck and there are still areas of the Gulf Coast that noone has yet been able to reach.  Are you prepared in case an earthquake hits us and leaves us cut off from the world?  Do you have water stored for drinking sufficient for one week?  Do you have a means of heating food and boiling water?  Do you have a source of light (not a plug in lamp)? Do you have food for one week?  Do you have basic first aid supplies? Do you have a battery operated radio so that you can keep informed about conditions? We wont freeze in our area, even in the heart of winter, but do you have sufficient sweaters, jackets and blankets?  Do you know what to do if you lose all your public services?  Are you prepared to reassure your children and grand children about their safety and well being in the event of a major catastrophe?  The CERT program trains you to deal with these contingencies.  You may want to consider going through CERT training to prepare yourself for an emergency that is real and potential.
  • Christina Gallegos became Lion Christina Gallegos at this meeting.  Dr Bill performed the induction ceremony to fulfill a promise he made to her at our August11 meeting.
  • Poor Lion President Carol.  She lost her bell again at this meeting - twice.  Even with her elaborate kangaroo pouch, Lion President Carol is having a difficult time holding onto her bell.

LION AL RODERIGUES SENIOR CITIZENS THANKSGIVING DINNER:

  • Lion Chair Richard Valle reports that he has reserved the Ralph Rugierri Senion Center for November 18, 2005, for this event.  Please mark this evening off in your calendar.  This is an “All Hands” event.  It takes every Lion member to carry off this event.
  • Tri Ced donates 22 fresh turkeys for this event.  He is making arrangements to have the Turkeys cooked.  This beats the old days when we had to cook the turkeys at home.  Lion Richard will arrange for a band to provide music for the occasion.  Lion Richard and Tri Ced pays for the band.  Our Club pays for all the other food and drink used at the event.  Our Club also pays for the use of the Rugierri Senior Center. MEETING AT MASONIC HOME SET FOR JANUARY 12, 2006:
  • Lion President Carol made arrangements with the Masonic Home to hold our dinner meeting of January 12, 2006, there.  Dinner will be $10.00 per person and will be prepared by the staff at the Masonic Home.  The program will be a tour of the facility.  RSVPs are a must for this meeting so that the proper amount of food can be prepared.  Members are encouraged to bring guests to this meeting, but you cannot leave any of your guests there.  You must bring home with you all guests that you bring.
