REPORT ON BOARD MEETING
OF OCTOBER 10, 2005
This report is courtesy
of Lion Helen Kennedy. Your correspondent did not attend this Board
meeting.
Lions attending were Tony
Acosta (chair), Ken Buffum, Rick Sealana, Gloria Watson, Cathie Kelly,
Jim Navarro, and Helen Kennedy.
Lion Tony Acosta reported
that the Fall Festival of the Arts was well attended. There
was good participation from the Lions’ club. The champagne
and strawberries were a big success and we should remember that for
the future events. We received donations of wine from Southern Wine
and Spirits and from our own Lion Fely Fernandez-Kwan. Leftover
wine will be used for our holiday party and donated to Winter Fest.
Lion’s
Night at the As: 75 people attended. We made a profit
of about $500.00 on the event because of the 50/50 raffle. The
winner of the raffle donated the money back to the club.
The Chamber
Expo will take place on October 13. Lions will have a
booth there for recruitment purposes.
CERT Training begins October
29 with two classes. The afternoon session is a make up for the
Lions who missed part 1 on October 22.
The Lions are having a
shower for Lion Christine Friday. Lion Christine
is making club history as being the first Lion to give birth
while a member of this club.
Winter Fest: Lion Gloria
Watson is in charge of our participation in this function. She
will decorate a tree and also a football-theme gift basket. Lion
Ken (Bah-humbug) Buffum will wear a Santa suit for the event. Lion
Tony Acosta will be the MC. Lion Helen Kennedy is also
on the organizing committee.
Earthquake in Pakistan:
Lion Johny Tahirkheli who is from Pakistan, passed a report to
the board through Lions Jim Navarro and Gloria Watson. He
would like the club to organize a fundraiser like we did
for the Tsunami victims. The
Board is supportive of the concept and wants to hear ideas. Lion
Johny is being asked to make a proposal to the Board.
The
meeting adjourned at 8:10 PM, a record.
Thanks Lion Helen
for this comprehensive report.
REPORT ON CLUB MEETING
OF OCTOBER 13, 2005
Lions attending were Tony
Acosta (presiding), Jim Navarro, Johny Tahirkheli, Joe Kimura, Diana
LaMountaine, Gloria Watson, Don Watson, Helen Kennedy, Conrad Preciado,
Ken Buffum, Roy Panlilio, and Ed Xavier. Also present
were Leos Cindy Nguyen (President) and Alex Yip.
Lion Johny Tahirkheli reported
on the devastation to his native Pakistan caused by the earthquake.
He estimates that 150,000 dead will be the final total (news reports
now list the number of dead at 80,000 with many buildings not yet
excavated). 40,000 children are still not yet accounted for. 40
million are homeless and winter is upon the homeless.
Lion Tony Acosta
set a new record for having his gavel stolen. It
was stolen within 60 seconds of opening the
meeting. It
will be difficult to beat this record.
Patricia
Abadesco from the Union City Police Department spoke to us about
community oriented policing. Union City
is blessed with many volunteers who respond
as grief counselors and as responders to
trauma events. Joining
us for our dinner meeting were Eva Padilla
(Parents project), Susan Scott (Crisis Intervention/CARE),
Marcia Vickroy (Crisis Intervention), Richard
Lightholder (CARE, Crisis Intervention),
and Reverend Albert Valencia (UCPD Chaplain).
The CARE program serves
senior citizens who are shut in. They check on seniors to see
if they have an adequate support system. The “Vial
of Life” holds medicines, lists medical
and personal contacts, alerts about medical
conditions. A sticker is also stuck
to a window to alert first responders to
the presence of the Vial of Life.
The Parent
Project exists to educate parents who
need assistance with dealing with their children.
Crisis Intervention
volunteers respond to traumatic events and are present to offer comfort
and solace to victims until their family support system arrives and
takes over.
Chaplain Albert Valencia
is the first Chaplain in the history of the UCPD. He
is an ordained minister. He represents
the UCPD at many functions and services.

LION AL RODERIGUES
SENIOR CITIZENS THANKSGIVING
DINNER
Lion Chair Richard Valle
reports that he has reserved the Ralph Rugierri Senior Center for November
18, 2005, for this event. Please mark this evening
off in your calendar. This
is an “All Hands” event. It
takes every Lion member
to carry off this event.
Tri-CED donates 22 fresh
turkeys for this
event. He
is making arrangements
to have the Turkeys
cooked. This beats the old days when we had to cook
the turkeys at home. Lion
Richard will arrange
for a band to provide
music for the occasion. Lion
Richard and Tri Ced
pays for the band. Our
Club pays for all
the other food and
drink used at the
event. Our
Club also pays for
the use of the Rugierri
Senior Center.
MAKE
A DIFFERENCE DAY
AT THE MEYER’S
ESTATE
The Union
City Lions’ Club
did make a difference
in Union City on
October 22. We
helped the East
Bay Regional Park
District restore
a part of the Meyer’s
Estate. Lions
Tony Acosta, Larry
Cheeves, Greg Stewart,
Rick Sealana, Christine
Gallegos, Carol
Dutra-Vernaci,
Helen Kennedy,
Phyllis Gray, Diane
LaMontaine, and
Ed Xavier helped
do the work. Marjorie
Xavier also was
present and helped. Many
Leos attended and
helped. The
young Leos men
did most of the
heavy work. Many
other volunteers
also helped. Good
citizens of Union
City worked alongside
Lions in this project.
We
worked a section
of the project
just inside the
main gate. First
we weeded the area,
then we dug holes to plant a hedge. The plants to make
the hedge were
then placed into the holes and the holes were filled. Compost
was spread over
the area and a topping of bark was then spread over the work. Last
a fence was installed
in order to keep the deer from eating our hard work.
