REPORT ON BOARD MEETING OF NOVEMBER 14, 2005

Lions in attendance were Carol Dutra Vernaci, Ida Gueco, Fely Fernandez Kwan, Ken Buffum, Bill Fournell, Cathie Kelley, Linda Fernandes, and Ed Xavier.

Patricia Abadesco asked for help from the Lions to defray costs of the crisis intervention program and the senior citizens contact program in Union City.  The Board thought that these were worthwhile projects and voted to support them with a grant of $500.00.

Winterfest: Lion Gloria Watson will be our chair.  She will make the entry from the Lion’s club.  Leos will help serve refreshments.  Our club and the Chamber of Commerce will co-sponsor the Toys for Tots drive at this event.

Christmas party: will be held on December 8 at the home of Lions Steve Miller and Diane LaMountaine.  This will take the place of our regular meeting for December.

There will be no Lions’ club meeting in December.  Our Christmas part will be our only meeting.

Charter Night and Valentine’s Dinner: Lions Ed Xavier and Ida Gueco will co-chair this event set for February 2006.

Membership report.  We now have 43 members and 9 lifetime members for a total of 52 members.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF NOVEMBER 10, 2005

Lions attending were Carol Dutra Vernaci, Ken Buffum, Phyllis Gray, Diane LaMountaine, Conrad Preciado, and Ed Xavier.  We had as our guest potential Lion Geeta.

Our speaker was Barbara Nagle who educated us on need for planning for retirement.  Most of us are nearing retirement and social security will not be sufficient to support us in our old age.  Most of us also do not have adequate pension and retirement funds.  Corporate pension funds are questionable.  All one has to do is look at Enron and at United Airlines in bankruptcy.  The only people with relatively secure pension and retirement funds are employees of government entities where funds are supported by taxpayers.  Ms. Nagle emphasized the need for all of us to plan financially for our retirement.

LION AL RODERIGUES SENIOR CITIZENS THANKSGIVING DINNER

Lions, you were GREAT!  Our signature event went off with only minor glitches.  We made many senior citizens happy by hosting one of their favorite parties of the year.

We fed over 300 senior citizens, our Lions and Leos who helped at the event.  More than 400 pounds of turkey were cooked, carved and served.  About 50 pumpkin pies were donated, cut and served.

Lions helping were Richard Valle (chair), Barbara Valle (co-chair), Tony Acosta, Antoinette A., Linda Fernandes, Helen Kennedy, Ken Buffum, Bowie Lee, Conrad Preciado, Ida Gueco, Greg Stewart, Laura Stewart, Joe Albano, Johny Tahirkheli, Regis Amann, Ed Xavier, Bill Fournell, Jim Navarro, Joe Kimura, Cathie Kelley, Larry Cheeves, Atul Mitra, Diana LaMountaine, Don Watson, Doug Tatum, Roy Panlilio, Andy Denoga, Jaime Jaramillo, Kim Evans, and Marilyn Simeon.  Also helping was potential Lion Geeta and visiting Lions Ron and Cathy Hudson.

Margie (Judy) Preciado and the Preciado clan (children, grand children and friends) carved the turkeys, helped on pies, did the salad, and generally moved mountains.

Our Lionesses gave their all. Lioness President Lu Goni worked so hard getting donations of pies that she was too ill to help the night of the event.  Lioness Cleo Powell came to the rescue and took charge.  Also helping were Lionesses Antoinette Seoane and Marcella Roderigues.  Potential member Patricia Abadesco also helped with the pies.

Our Leos were great as usual.  At least 40 Leos turned out to help set up, serve, clean up, and dance with the seniors.  We can be very proud of our Leos.

Union City Lions, TAKE A BOW!
