LIONS CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
NO. 9  March 3, 2006

REPORT ON BOARD MEETING OF FEBRUARY 13, 2006

Lion Jim Navarro gave his report about our Club’s efforts at the Oakland Blind Center on January 16, 2006.  We fed 55 meals to those attending the Advisory Board meeting.  We collected $150.00 from those purchasing dinners and that amount was donated to the Oakland Blind Center.  Lions helping were Jim Navarro, Roy Panlilio, and Phyllis Gray.  Also helping were the parents of Lion Roy and Monsignor Olivero visiting from the Philippines.

Lion Tony Acosta is working on setting up the spring garden work day at the Meyers’ sisters estate.  He is targeting March 18, 19, 25, or 26.  More to come on this item when we have more definite information.

Lions Carol Dutra Vernaci and Helen Kennedy reported on their visit to the Fremont Asian Lions club (in formation).  Over 100 people attended their organization dinner.  They appear to be well organized, enthusiastic, and well on their way to becoming a full fledged Lions Club.

The Board agreed to hold both meetings in April at noon.  There will be no evening meetings in April other than the Board meeting.

We now have 59 members in our Club.

Elections are coming up.  The target date for elections is our April 13 meeting.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF FEBRUARY 9, 2006

This was our Charter Night/Valentine’s Dinner.  We chose this meeting to honor two Lions with Life memberships.  Honored were Lions Doug Tatum and Al Rose.  Both newly minted life members told the Lions assembled about some of their work with the Lions Club.  Lion Doug recounted his experiences as Leo’s Advisor for many years.  Lion Al told about a trip he made to the Philippines with our Club to donate ambulances, a full field hospital, thousands of books and many other items to our twin clubs in the Philippines.

41 Lions and guests attended.  Lions attending were Al Rose, Doug Tatum, Carol Dutra-Vernaci, Tony Acosta, Regis Amann, Kim Evans, Fely Fernandes-Kwan, Kristina Gallegos, Phyllis Gray, Ida Gueco, Helen Kennedy, Joe Kimura, Tom Kitayama, Diane LaMountaine, Jim Navarro, Pam Navarro, Marissa Navarro, Frederico Rodriguez, Rick Sealana, Dave Sweilem, Johny Tahirkheli, Lou Verkamp, Travis Walker, Don Watson, Gloria Watson, and Ed Xavier.  Guests attending were Raymond Kwan and his son; Peter Gray, Sally Kimura, Lioness Heidi Kityama, Steve Miller, Bonnie Singer, Kathy Sealana, Art Stohl, Pearl Stohl, Zile Tahirkheli, Betty Tatum, and Marjorie Xavier.

We inducted three new Lions into our club.  They are Marissa Navarro, Travis Walker and Lou Verkamp.

We then had a rollicking good time celebrating Valentine’s day. Our Lionesses distributed chocolates and gifts as did Lion Ida Gueco. Lion Ida also distributed red roses to all ladies attending the evening festivities. Lioness Heidi led those assembled to sign some oldies but goodies.  Unfortunately this group could not carry a tune. It was all in fun and all attending had a good time.

REPORT ON CLUB MEETING OF FEBRUARY 23, 2006

We returned to eMocha after many field trips.  Lions attending were Rick Sealana, Joe Kimura, Gloria Watson, Mac Sandhu, Helen Kennedy, Tony Acosta, Regis Amann, Dave Sweilem, Kristina Gallegos, Kim Evans, Fely Fernandes-Kwan, Ed Xavier, and Bill Fournell.  Lion President Carol made a cameo appearance.

Lion First Vice President Tona Acosta ran the meeting and promptly lost his gavel to the Club Counselor, Lion Rick Sealana.  Counseling in this Club comes early and is expensive.

Attending as a guest was Gary Louie, D.O., an optometrist practicing in Union City, and Prakash Sharma.

It was announced to the membership that both April meetings will be noon meetings.

Our program was the Relay for Life.  This event is planned to be held in Union City on August 4 and 5, 2006, at Logan High School.  Shauna Taradesh and Elizabeth Green from the American Cancer Society presented the program to us. They were joined by John, a volunteer, who will be helping Union City launch its own Relay for Life.

When Relay for Life was held in Fremont as a Tri-City event, Union City Lions would cook the breakfast meal for participants.

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.  Relay for Life is a major fund raiser for this effort.

STUDENT SPEAKERS CONTEST:

This years subject is “Internet, Friend or Villain.” Our Club level contest was held at the Council Chambers at City Hall on February 15, 2006.  Lion Regis Amann chaired the event for our Club.  Lions attending were Regis Amann, Bill Fournell, Dave Sweilem, Don Watson, Tony Acosta, Ed Xavier, and Helen Kennedy.  Also attending were Marjorie Xavier and Tommie Lindsey, the forensics teacher at Logan High School.

Judges were members of the forensics program at Cal State East Bay.  They were Taunya De Young, Alison E. Germaine, Aaron Goin, Portia Grogan, and Shiva Premmanisakul.

Our four contestants are students at Logan High School.  They are Rajiv Narayan, a sophomore; he wants to pursue economics and business in college.  Jose Tanquilut, a senior; he is interested in Astronomy and wants to study science. A.J. Pascua, a senior; he is going to attend Columbia University and wants to go on to law school.  He is interested in politics.  Our winner was Eric Trabucco; he is a senior and wants to become a teacher.  Eric Trabucco went on to the Zone contest held on February 27,2006, and won the Zone contest.  His next contest will be the Regional contest to be held at the San Leandro library at 6:30 PM on March 22, 2006; the doors will close at 7:00 PM.  The library is located at 300 Estudillo in San Leandro. Lion Regis reports that he was the only Lion from Union City attending the Zone level contest in support of Eric Trabucco.  Lion Regis hopes that more Union City Lions will turn out for the Match 22, 2006, contest to support our Club’s entry at the Regional level contest.

PARTNERING WITH THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Lion Dave Sweilem is proposing that our Club participates in the Chamber of Commerce Crab Feed.  Maybe our Club can buy a table for Lions and become a sponsor of the event.  Tickets would be $50.00 each, and we need 10 Lions to make a table. $35.00 would go to the Chamber and $15.00 would go to the Lions Club as a donation. If 10 Lions participate, we would get our Lions logo on the event banner and be mentioned in the program.  This would be good publicity for the Club and good support for the Chamber.  Did you know that the Lions Club is a member of the Chamber?  Any Lion can attend a Chamber event as a member and learn more about our community.

VISIT OUR WEB SITE:  Did you know that our club maintains a web site?  Lion Bruce Davis is our webmaster.  Visit our website at www.unioncitylions.com.  Lion Bruce does a superb job with our web site.  See, you have a web site and lion Bruce does all the work.  Thanks Lion Bruce.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: Remember that the club will treat a prospective new member to their first lunch or dinner as our guest.  This gives people an opportunity to visit us and see if they have an interest in our club without incurring any financial obligation.  You also get to invite a friend to lunch and have that lunch paid for by the club.  Such a deal.
