LIONS
CLUB OF UNION CITY NEWSLETTER
NO. 10 April 5, 2006
REPORT ON BOARD MEETING
OF MARCH 13, 2006
This report is courtesy of Lion Helen Kennedy. Your reporter
was not able to attend the March Board meeting.
The Lions Club agreed
to adopt the Union City blood drives that are held at Logan High School. Adult
volunteers (Lions) are needed two times a year (fall and spring) to work with
Red Cross staff. We will greet
students, get them registered, help with refreshments, and monitor the
student donors for signs of reaction. The Club needs a volunteer coordinator
to be our point person for the Red Cross. We’ll need held for
our first blood drive in the fall of 2006.
The Board voted to be a
sponsor of the Chamber of Commerce Crab Feed set for March 24, 2006. Our
club is a member of the Chamber of Commerce. We
have 10 tickets for sale at $35.00 each. The club is contributing
an additional $150.00 sponsor fee to the Chamber to support the event. Lion
Tony Acosta has the tickets.
A work party for the Meyers’ Estate
(Dry Creek Cottage) is set for March 25, 2006, from 9:00 A.M. until
around noon. We will be doing
some springtime maintenance on the garden that we began renovating
in October for our Make a Difference Day project. Eventually,
there will be a beautiful rose garden at the Meyer’s estate,
but the rose garden will be at a location different from our garden.
Tickets
are selling fast for the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus
performing on May 7. It looks like this will be another
sell-out. Lion Jim Navarro needs people to help with the event. He
also has program ads for sale, and 100% of the money paid for those
ads will come back to the Lions Club. Lions are invited to
attend a free 45 minute preview performance on May 3 in the San Francisco
City Hall rotunda, an event sponsored by SF Mayor Gavin Newsom. If
you can attend, please wear your Lions gear and name badge so we
show a presence.
The Club adopted a new fund
raiser. We are
putting a group together to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise to Mexico
February 12-16, 2007. Lions
will receive $20.00 for every person in our group who goes on the
cruise, so if 100 people go on the cruise, Lions will make $2,000.00.
Tickets are $369.00 per person and a $100.00 deposit is due on March
20. Lion Jim Navarro is
chairing the project.

Helen Kennedy paid her debt to the club after the club brought
in five new members. She came to the meeting as a red head, then with black
hair, then with auburn hair, and finally with blond hair. We all had
a lot of fun with change of hair color. The skit raised a lot
of money for our fine box and Lion Gloria made her quota of fines and
then more.
Our speaker was Lion Larry
Cheeves, City Manager for Union City, who presented a state of the
city speech. Union Landing is nearing build out. The Nakamura
clinic is nearing completion. Union City was given
a grade of “A” for
building affordable housing. The remaining portion of the
Pacific States Steel property is slated for development into
240,000 square feet of office or research and development
space, 216 town homes, and 119 single family homes. The BART/Rail
confluence site at Union City is being planned. Soon
the ACE Train, the Capital corridor line, the Dumbarton line,
and high speed rail will be stopping at Union City at the
BART Station. The City now owns the PG&E site. Plans
are under review to turn that site into retail commercial,
a park plaza, a large parking structure, and 1000 new housing
units. The route 84 disagreement wit Fremont is nearing a
conclusion. The gymnasium under construction on Union
City Boulevard south of Horner Street should be open by January
2007. It
will have 32,000 square feet of usable floor space. The new
fire station id DeCoto will replace the old one. The
City is attempting to purchase the site of the LDS Church
adjacent to City Hall. A new 47,000 square foot library
will be built on that site. A separate building for
the police department will also be built on the site. Thanks
Lion Larry for a very informative presentation.
REPORT
ON CLUB MEETING OF MARCH, 2006: This
report is courtesy of Lion Helen Kennedy as your reporter
was out of town for this meeting.
Lions attending were
Jaime Jaramillo, Tim Gutierrez, Helen Kennedy, Joe
Kimura, Christine Gallegos, Fely Fernandez-Kwan, Kim Evans, Larry
Cheeves, Bill Fournell, Regis Amann, Tony Acosta, Jim
Navarro, Greg Stewart, and Gloria Watson.
Guests
were Dr. Gary Louie, our new fire chief Gilbert ?,
Gilbert Orozco, Dr. Pat Juarequi, and Rick LaPlante.
Rick
La Plante spoke as the Executive Director of the New Haven Schools
Foundation and told us about the Foundation’s
mini grant program to fund innovative class room
projects. A fourth grade class recently learned
about ancient Egyptian culture by actually mummifying
Cornish game hens, and that project was funded
by a grant. The foundation also coordinates
and distributes all of the scholarships given to
Logan students, including the ones given by the
Lions club.
Dr. Pat Juarequi, Superintendent
of the New Haven Unified School District, gave a straightforward
and candid talk about issues and initiatives
affecting the school district. NHUSD is facing challenging
times due to declining enrollment and academic performance in Union City schools. The
NHUSD recently conducted an in-depth strategic planning process that included
participation from teachers, parents, and the community. The resulting plan was
approved by the Board of Trustees. Now the district will be making changes
in order to achieve this set of goals. Lions Linda Fernandes and Diane
La Mountaine both attended CERT training. Our student speaker did
not win the region level contest. Lion Regis Amann reported on the Student
Speakers contest and how important it is for him, personally, to be involved. So
far 28 people have signed up for the Royal Caribbean cruise to Mexico. Our
club has already raised $560.00 from this fundraiser. The
Lions in Sight trip to Mexico has four confirmed
members - Lions Tony Acosta, Helen Kennedy, Jaime
Jaramillo, and Christine Gallegos. Union
City’s 50th anniversary
is in 2009, A steering committee is now forming. Lions
are invited to participate and join in the fun. The
kick off meeting is April 17, 2006, at 7:00 P.M.
at the Council Chambers.
LIONS’ SCHOLARSHIPS: Lions Cathie Kelly, Helen Kennedy, Ed
Xavier, Tom Kitayama, and Joe Kimura met of March 14, 2006, to select this
years scholarship awardees. Lioness Heidi Kitayama also participated
in this event. Names of the winners will be with held until next months bulletin
so that the students can be surprised at the ceremony to be held at Logan HS. More
to come.
